Delegate Algie Howell reaches out to Jackson-Feild Homes Girl’s

Jarratt, VA – Delegate Algie Howell, D. 90th District, visited the students of Jackson-Feild Homes’ Gwaltney School in Jarratt on November 20th. Delegate Howell provided much insight and understanding about the many challenges so many young people face in life. He related to the students in a very personal style reaching out to involve their participation in a lively exercise about setting the right priorities in life. He encouraged the girls to be open to changing their priorities to help them succeed in achieving their objectives. Delegate Howell shared several inspirational stories about family and life that captured the hearts and attention of the students.

Several girls thanked him for spending so much time and sharing his stories. Becky China, Executive Director of Jackson-Field Homes remarked, “One girl was so moved by Delegate Howell’s message that she has asked to write him. She said he was one of the most motivating speakers she had ever heard.”

The visit is part of the Legislators’ Series on the campus this fall organized by Board of Trustees member Sallie Wanchisn. “The Campaign for Awareness is near and dear to my heart. I love Jackson-Feild Homes and want to encourage our Legislators to learn more about residential treatment options for at-risk girls in the Commonwealth. I also want our girls to hear uplifting words of encouragement from elected leaders throughout the state challenging them to grasp their futures and make them their own.” said Ms. Wanchisn.

Jackson-Feild Homes is a non-profit organization that has been in existence since 1855. The Gwaltney School was opened in 1994 and has graduated 77 high school students since 1998. The school offers regular and special education, three vocational tracks, on-line college courses, GED preparation and testing and is licensed by the Department of Education.
